At Bull Creek Podiatry, we employ the Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) Doppler Test as a crucial component of our comprehensive podiatric assessments. This test is a simple, non-invasive procedure that simultaneously measures the blood pressure in the arteries of your ankles and arms using specialized Doppler ultrasound equipment. The ABI test is instrumental in diagnosing Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), a common circulatory problem where narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to your limbs.
Here’s how the ABI test benefits you:
- Early Detection: PAD can often go unnoticed until it becomes severe. The ABI test helps us identify any circulation issues early, often before symptoms arise.
- Understanding Your Risks: If you have diabetes, smoke, or have high blood pressure, you're at greater risk for PAD. The ABI test is a key part of evaluating your overall vascular health.
- Minimally Invasive: Unlike some other vascular tests, the ABI is performed without needles or dyes and doesn’t require any special preparation.
- Insightful Results: By comparing blood pressure readings from your ankles and arms, we gain insights into your blood flow. This can inform our treatment plan, which may include recommendations for lifestyle adjustments, medication, or further vascular assessment.
During the test, you’ll rest comfortably while we place 4 blood pressure cuffs on your limbs. These will all inflate, like a standard BP monitor, taking BP readings, however, the Doppler device also uses ultrasound to listen to, and analyse the pulse in your arteries, providing rich diagnostic feedback for the podiatrist. The ABI value helps us determine if, and where there may be signs of arterial blockage and, if so, how significant it is.
Whether you’re experiencing symptoms or not, the ABI Doppler Test is a vital part of maintaining your lower limb health and preventing future complications. Our dedicated team at Bull Creek Podiatry is here to ensure that every step you take is on the path to optimal podiatric wellness.
